Ethereal Lives

As I’ve mentioned before I’m currently trying to get my first book published so today I thought I’d share and excerpt with you:

Blurb:

Hearing word of Earth’s pending destruction, Ax and his men decide to grab a human and sell it to the highest bidder. But he didn’t realise what he was getting when his men picked Ariane. Believing humans to be simple, docile creatures, he gets a big shock when he finally meets one.

Ariane grew up tough. She knows how to defend herself, and has no plans to go to the auction block quietly. She intends to stop at every planet, see everything, and push every button she can along the way, and she’s dragging Ax along for the ride.

Excerpt:

The human regarded him with a raised eyebrow. “If that’s real, and this is a space ship, what are you, an alien?”

He thought about its question before answering. “I think technically, now you are the alien.”

The human rolled its eyes. “Come on, drop the act. You’re human just like me. Now I’ve had enough, take me back to my holiday, or home, whichever.”

Ax crossed his arms over his chest and glared down at the human. “We may look human but I assure you we are not. This image,” he said waving a hand in front of himself. “Was merely to make you feel more comfortable, you are the only human here. In fact, as of five Earth hours ago you are the only human in the universe. Your planet no longer exists. You are the last human and my prisoner. As soon as we reach the Sixth Galaxy you will be sold to the highest bidder, making me and my crew very rich.”

He watched emotions flash across the human’s face before it finally settled on disbelief. It crossed its arms over its chest and took on a stubborn stance. “Alright, if you’re not human, show me what you actually are.”

Glaring at the annoying creature in front of him, he thought through his options. He could show his true self although it wasn’t a good idea, or he could refuse the request. However, the human was obviously in denial about its situation, which made the thing extremely annoying.

They had to go to Xanlas to get fuel, and would need to blend in there. Xans were not the nicest of creatures to look at, it would be the perfect appearance to prove his point.

In the blink of an eye the human him faded away, as his height increased by at least a foot, his skin turned grey. All hair left his body, and his fingers grew to about three times their human length.

Shock appeared on the human’s face as it saw the change, then seconds later it crumpled to the floor.

“What happened?” Sek, his second in command asked as he came over and nudged the human with his foot.

“I don’t know.” Ax turned to the controls and searched why humans would drop to the floor in such a way. “Apparently, it’s called a faint; they do it when scared or overwhelmed.” He looked down at the human with a frown. “That’s inconvenient, it better not think it can do that on a regular basis.”
